Kumar Stacked Ring Filters

The filter technology with unique Stacked Ring Candles

Ideal for clarification of Sugar Syrup, Honey, Wine, Beer, Fruit juices, Pharmaceutical products and a lot of other applications where crystal clear filtrate is desired.

  • Filter comprises of a shell fitted with filter elements formed by stacking of specially designed rings on a suitably machined rod to form a cylindrical porous structure which is rigid in design, having a flow volute on the internals.
  • These elements are subsequently coated with filter-aid to form a sturdy and porous filter bed. The fluid to be filtered is then passed through this and the filtered fluid is taken to a collection tank or for downstream processing.
  • Standard material of construction is SS316 and sealing gaskets in Silicon, PTFE and Viton to withstand hot water sanitization or steam sterilization.
  • The stacked ring design facilitates a compact filter size, having a minimum floor space requirement for a large surface area of filtration. Besides, there is no requirement of any consumable spares, except in expansive filter aid.
  • Standard models having filtration area upto 5 sq. mts. are offered, catering for flow rate of upto 5,000 ltr./hr for 60% sugar solution. Models for higher flow rates and concentration can also be designed.
  • Reduction in loss of expensive fluids by recyling the hold-up volume in next batch, thus, saving on expensive solvents eg. Hexane used in solvent extraction, honey, wine etc.
  • Time saving on reassembly as compared to Sparklers / Filter Press, as unit need not be dismantled for cleaning.

Constructional features:

Comprises of specially designed rings having semi-circular projections which form a cylindrical porous structure when stacked one above the other on a specially machined rod having a flow volute. A number of such ring stacks are assembled on a holding plate in a filter housing to give a filtration area as desired. Rings stack heights are offered in 500, 750 and 1000mm.

Performance and operational details:

Circulation of slurry of suitable filter aid is done initially till it forms a bed of filter aid on the stacked ring surface. The slurry is preferably made of of the same fluid which is to be filtered and after formation of the bed, filtration is effected to avoid contamination of batch.

Use of a pump with a three way valve at suction facilitates immediate changeover from slurry feed to fluid filtration without disturbing the bed. Similarly a three way valve at outlet facilitates removal of filtered fluid to storage or downstream process.

As filtration proceeds, there is a cake buildup on the stacked ring element, on completion of filtration process, the inlet/outlet/drain valves are closed and compressed air at 1.5kgs/cm2 is admitted in the reverse direction. The cake is thus discharged and rests in the conical hold-up portion of the filter housing. The supernatent fluid is drained out of a side valve for future use, thus saving on expensive fluids.

The process can be operated manually, semi-automatic or fully automatic.

The following standard models are offered for normal applications in the food and pharma industry. Larger models are also available against special design.

Flow rates based on 60brix sugar solutions at 40°C, for other concentration and fluids, these values may differ.

Complete systems comprising of pre-coat tank, piping with valves and fittings, pump and motor are offered. The system is assembled using Tri-clover fittings for all joints, making it simple for dismantling and assembly during periodic maintenance.

Pilot plant unit is available for in-house trials and results used to design systems for plant-scale units.
