What is filter housing?

Filter housing is an enclosure or casing designed to hold a filter cartridge or filter element securely in place within a filtration system. Filter housings come in various shapes, sizes, and materials, depending on the specific application and the type of filter being used. They are customized as per the calculated filtration area required, which gives the number and size of cartridges to be used, as well as the pressure and temperature of the process, as well as the process chemistry.

As India's leading filter housing manufacturer, we offer a wide range of options in SS filter housings, Hastelloy filter housings, MS filter housings, pp filter housings, and coated filter housings .Our filtration housings are designed to work seamlessly in various industries, guaranteeing optimal performance for your specific application. They are commonly used in industries such as water treatment, oil and gas, pharmaceuticals, food and beverage, and many others to ensure efficient and effective filtration of liquids or gases.

Basic filtration with a filter housing typically follows these steps:

  • Fluid Entry: The fluid to be filtered enters the filter housing through an inlet port. This can be a liquid or gas depending on the application.
  • Filtration: As the fluid travels through, it encounters a porous filter, like a tiny security guard. This guard, called the filter cartridge, is on the lookout solid particles. The filter then retains these particles, while allowing the fluid to pass through. The particles may be the desired component or the undesired one, depending on the application for which the filter has been installed. For example, in Catalyst recovery filters, the filters trap expensive catalyst particles which are to be recovered, while in the case of filter systems for injectables, the filter retains pathogens that would otherwise compromise the integrity of the medicine.
  • Clean Fluid Exit: Once the fluid has passed through the filter media, it emerges from the housing through an outlet port. The filtered fluid is now cleaner and free from the impurities that were captured by the filter media.
  • Contaminant Disposal: The captured contaminants remain trapped within the filter cartridge or element. Over time, as the filter becomes saturated with contaminants, it may need to be replaced or cleaned, depending on the type of filter and the level of filtration required.
  • Maintenance: Regular maintenance of the filter housing is essential to ensure optimal performance. This may involve replacing filter cartridges, cleaning the housing, and inspecting for any signs of damage or wear of the sealing gasket or O-ring.

Key Features of Filter Housing

  1. Pressure rating: withstands operational pressure of the process.
  2. Flow rate: handles the desired volume of fluid efficiently without excessive pressure drop
  3. Sealing: ensures leak-proof connections and proper filtration, not allowing filter bypass
  4. Cleanability: allows easy disassembly and cleaning for maintenance, without the need for disconnecting the entire housing from the process line
  5. Pressure gauge: monitors filter performance and indicates when the filter cartridge must be replaced
  6. Mounting bracket: facilitates stable placement and integration into various systems.

Benefits of a well-designed Filtration Housing

  • Clean filtrate: Protects fluids from contaminants by not allowing any bypass to occur, ensuring quality and safety.
  • Efficient filtration: Inlet/outlet sizes should be optimized to minimize pressure drop
  • Durable & reliable: Built to last and operate effectively for years, considering the process chemistry, thus maximizing uptime.

Types of Filter Housings

Carbon Steel

SS316 / SS304 / Carbon Steel

Our stainless steel filter housings offer superior durability, crafted from corrosion-resistant SS316L & SS304 grades, ideal for industries like pharmaceuticals. For cases allowing carbon steel, our well-designed, affordable carbon SS filter housings serve as alternatives. In extremely corrosive environments, we provide nickel-based alloy filter housings like Hastelloy C276 & C22 for unmatched reliability.

Lined Housing

Lined Housing

In some cases, coating the contact parts of the housing with a polymer that is compatible with the process chemistry is economical. We offer stainless steel/carbon steel housings coated with a variety of fluoropolymers such as PTFE, Halar, PFA, etc. Our coatings are spark-tested to ensure the coating is of an acceptable thickness over the entire coated area

Polypropylene

Polypropylene

PP filter housings, made of durable polypropylene, excel in efficient filtration. Polypropylene filter housing offers exceptional chemical resistance, to use with corrosive fluids. Ensuring reliable filtration from water treatment to pharmaceuticals, they're easy to install, maintain, light-weight, cost-effective and customize, offering versatile solutions.

Applications of Filter Housing

Filter housing finds applications across various industries and processes where the filtration of liquids or gases is essential. Here are some common applications:

▣ Water Treatment : Filter housings are vital in water treatment, removing impurities, sediments, and contaminants from drinking water, wastewater, and industrial process water.

▣ Chemical Processing : In chemical manufacturing facilities, filter housings are employed to ensure the purity of chemicals by removing particles, solids, and other contaminants from process streams.

▣ Oil and Gas Industry : Filter housings play a crucial role in the oil and gas industry for filtration applications such as removing particulates, water, and contaminants from crude oil, natural gas, and hydraulic fluids.

▣ Pharmaceuticals : Filter housings are utilized in pharmaceutical manufacturing processes to maintain the purity and quality of pharmaceutical products by removing bacteria, particles, and impurities from process fluids.

▣ Food and Beverage : In the food and beverage industry, filter housings are used to ensure product quality and safety by removing solids, microorganisms, and contaminants from ingredients, beverages, and process water.

▣ Electronics Manufacturing : Filter housings are employed in electronics manufacturing processes for removing particles and contaminants from chemicals, solvents, and process fluids used in semiconductor fabrication and printed circuit board assembly.

▣ Automotive Industry : Filter housings are utilized in automotive manufacturing processes for filtering lubricants, coolants, and hydraulic fluids to ensure the performance and longevity of automotive components and systems.

▣ HVAC Systems : In heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, filter housings are used to remove dust, pollen, and other airborne particles from indoor air, improving indoor air quality and system efficiency.

▣ Mining and Metals : Filter housings are employed in mining and metal processing operations for filtering process fluids and wastewater to remove solids, contaminants, and impurities generated during extraction and refining processes.

▣ Agriculture and Irrigation : In agricultural applications, filter housings are used in irrigation systems to remove sediments, algae, and other debris from water sources, ensuring the efficient and uniform distribution of water to crops.

Why Choose Kumar Process Consultants?

Kumar process Consultants has extensive experience with housing design as well as fabrication. The fabrication is done at our Thane facility. The housing dimensions and MOC are calculated as per process parameters such as required flow, pressure rating, temperature, etc. by our engineers, and the design is executed by our skilled fabrication team. The housings can be provided in different surface finishes, as per requirement.

If required, housings are also made as per ASME section VIII, with a third-party inspection. In our decades of service to the Chemical and Pharmaceutical industries, we have successfully passed third party inspections from various reputed companies such as TUV and Bureau Veritas.

Each housing is hydrotested and inspected prior to dispatch, so that there is no downtime associated with any manufacturing defect of the housing.
